With the media’s focus on Pret A Manger during the last month and more widely the catering industry there has never been a greater need for clearer food labelling. Many have called on the government to make changes to the current legislation, with Michael Gove saying that he’s having civil servants investigate changing the law.
The Food Standards Agency have stated that food products containing the 14 main ingredients likely to cause an allergic reaction must be labelled as such. These ingredients include: celery; cereals that contain gluten; crustaceans; eggs; fish; lupin; milk; molluscs; mustard; tree nuts; peanuts; sesame seeds; soybeans; sulphur dioxide and sulphites.
Producers must clearly label food or drink products containing any of these allergens, whether the products have been pre-packed or not. Next month the international food chain plans to update its food labels across UK stores so that they show all ingredients. It also states that it will be displaying more allergen warnings in store and on its freshly made produce.
